The Chicago Bears released their starting running back Cedric Benson on Monday due to his frequent off-field issues. After coming off of a boating DUI charge, Benson was arrested last weekend for driving an automobile under the influence. The Bears, who had previously stated that Benson was their starting back entering the 2008 season, sent the him home on Monday and placed him on waivers (read: released him) later in the day.

Immediately after being drafted 4th overall in 2005 (as a replacement for then-starter Thomas Jones), the Bears and Benson were not on the same page. Benson held out for 36 days before signing a 5-year $35 million contract. After the hold-out, Benson was less than impressive, amassing only 1,600 yards (3.8 yards per carry) and 10 touchdowns over his 3 years as a professional. Benson had two years remaining on his deal when he was released.

Only hours after the news of his release hit the press, reports from Foxboro indicated that the Patriots are interested in brining the troubled RB in for a visit. The team had already shown interest in bolstering the RB-corps, having brought in RBs Kevin Jones and Samkon Gado over the past few weeks.

Benson would most likely fall into a role similar to that of Sammy Morris – the grind it out, pound the ball player. With Morris’ sternum clavicle separation last season, the Pats are clearly covering all bases.

Although the NFL still needs to review the Benson arrest tapes and determine whether or not any punishment is necessary, don’t be surprised to see Benson making a visit to Foxboro in the near future.
