The most wonderful time of the offseason has begun… well, one of the most wonderful times. The Free Agency period has begun. Players move from team to team – some get big pay days, others get snubbed. Regardless, it's an interesting time of the year.

But before we get into that, the Pats have already made a roster move. On the last possible day to re-sign restricted free agents, the Patriots signed Randall Gay to a 1-year $1.3 million RFA contract. This means that if another team wants him, they can sign him. However, they would have to surrender a second round pick to the Pats as compensation. But enough of that, let's get to the good stuff.

As everyone expects, the Patriots will most likely be searching for some linebacking help this time through free agency. Some names come to mind: ex-Ravens LB Adalius Thomas, ex-Steeler LB Joey Porter (who was released yesterday). Both players would demand a high contract (Thomas' number should be around $8.5-$9 million per year), but both are Pro Bowl players. Word on the street is that "within 48 hours" Adalius Thomas will be a New England Patriot.

Another area the Pats may look is Wide Receiver. With Reche Caldwell dropping the big-game balls, Troy Brown getting up there in age (possibly retiring?), Chad Jackson being a disappointment (and injured – he tore his ACL in the playoff loss against the Colts), and Jabar Gaffney being our best receiver (he should be a number two receiver), it is clear the Pats will look for some extra help. Rumors were spread about the Pats making a run at Oakland's Randy Moss, but that doesn't seem likely. How about Donte' Stallworth? Other than his injuries, he seems to have big-play potential.  Ex-Saints WR Joe Horn is another name that comes up. He was released by the team yesterday because of cap issues. The Saints wanted him to take a pay-cut but they forgot that Joe Horn don't take nothing from nobody… 'cept Joe Horn.

Finally, on a side note, the Pats may be interested in an ex-Patriot. The Dallas Cowboys officially released Drew Bledsoe yesterday. The Pats do love having a veteran QB backing up Brady…
